worse herpes outbreaks if hiv positive?

Postby RachelS on Mon Dec 03, 2007 5:59 am

If someone has genital herpes and is also hiv positive, would their outbreaks be worse?I had unprotected sex with my long term boyfriend who told me that he had been tested and was healthy. During our relationship I found out I have herpes (from him), the kind that is usually oral (herpes 1 or something). He said he often had cold sores as a child and suspiciously shortly before I was diagnosed he had a zit near his mouth which I think was really a cold sore. Now that we have broken up I have discovered that he was never tested for STD's but says he always used protection in the past (didnt with me b/c i was a virgin). Now I am very worried about HIV and I know I need to get tested but I have anxiety issues and I havent worked up the nerve yet.If was HIV positive (even in the beginning stages), would my herpes outbreaks be worse? I have only had my initial outbreak and one other one in 2 1/2 years. Thanks everyone.I guess I meant would I have more outbreaks not worse ones. I know I need to be tested...just wanted some opinions in the meantime. I am too scared to know for sure right now.

I'm not sure if HIV would make it worse or not. I know stress and menstral cycles tend to bring and outbreak on and sometimes makes its worse. So I guess it could.. I would have some testing done, but HIV is going to be your less likley one to contract. If your sure that this came from him, I would consider getting testing for GC/Chlym, HPV, Trich, and then a Vaginal C/S...

If you were HIV positive, your outbreaks could be worse because your immune system would not be as good. However, you can't justify that you don't have HIV by not having many herpes outbreaks. For one, many people have HIV for periods of time without having any symptoms ie opportunistic infections. If you are worried about it, your best bet is to suck it up and get tested. There is really no other way to know.

I'm not HIV positive or have Herpes but no, it would be the same but with HIV, you have to deal with alot of illness and things like that.. You would have breakouts of dark spots of the skin, diarrhea for about a month, it's real tough having HIV..

Okay first I HAVE to address the earlier statement that was made in regards to "lower chance of contracting HIV through heterosexuality"....Are you kidding me?!!! You actually believe that? Young heterosexual WOMEN are moving towards the forefront of HIV/AIDS infections. More and more each year. HIV is NOT a gay disease. Ridiculous!!Anyways....don't have unprotected sex. The fact that the jack*** was willing to have sex with you without protection even though he was sexually active in the past really shows how dirty he was. And your question...no. Having HIV does not necessarily mean individual outbreaks will be worse. The frequency of out breaks in anyone with any type immune deficiency would go up. The healthier you are physically and mentally...meaning problems with stress, depression and such...the less outbreaks you may have. Hormonal changes also can cause outbreaks.

Having genital herpes can increase the risk of being infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and it can cause serious problems for people living with HIV. But I dont think HIV can make outbreaks worse if you already have HIV and contract herpes. The only way I see this happening is if you're in a progressive HIV stage where your immune system is very low.People who have genital herpes sores are more likely to be infected with HIV during intercourse. When you develop a sore, your immune system tries to heal it, so there are many immune cells concentrated in that spot. Those are the cells that HIV infects. If HIV in semen, vaginal fluid, or blood comes in contact with a herpes sore, the risk for infection is high.So you should be ok, but if I were you I would get tested for the next 6 months just to make sure. Good Luck!

i just kinda wanna address the whole issue of hiv and hetero contraction, i saw in here that the issue of the gay/hiv relationship wasn't an issue, i fully disagree, it isn't just a gay disease your right, but it just depends where you live take for example the usa, hetero transmission is very rare, so in the USA yes you could say it is a homosexual issue, now somewhere like africa, it is a heterosexual problem, b/c of the issue of the different strains and circumsion issues, thats why its running rampid, you wanna know why the female population is soaring with new cases, b/c men are sleeping with men and not telling there women, its just a fact...im sorry, im not a homophobe at all, but the facts are the facts, and lets say that iv drugs has alot to do with the straight population getting it, now am i saying its impossible to get it hetero, no ofcourse not, but chances are still way less than a percent, just my take
