I got an inconconclusive test on antibodies of hiv when donating blood?

Postby kim2thechi on Sun Apr 06, 2008 12:43 am

ok so i attempted to donate blood and they said that im hiv negative and i have the hiv RNA testing came out negative...but my antibody test came out "inconclusive". i called red cross and they said it could be because I had a cold or came in contact with someone that had the flu because its that sensitive... i also found this on the FDA website "Although it is highly unlikely that individuals with indeterminate or inconclusive test results are actually infected with HIV, FDA is erring on the side of safety to assure that the nation's blood products are as safe as possible. Although this policy may disqualify some healthy individuals from donating blood, it has proven effective in protecting the nation's blood supply."but im soooo paranoid! i got 2 hiv tests, one that was oraquick (through the mouth) and a blood test, but im still paranoid...what are the chances??oh by the way those two tests were negative

That cannot mean you are on the frame period in your case because you got a RNA test and it was negative (a Western Blot maybe). Get the same screening test repeated in six months (no sooner for it can turn inconclusive again)

I can appreciate your concern but the chances are strong that you are fine. Talk with your doctor about getting retested in 6 months. There are many reasons why a test result could be inconclusive other then actually being HIV positive.

To be on the safe side, go to a Dr and get tested for HIV/AIDS as well as all other common STDs.........better safe than sorry.........then go again in 3 or 6 months to get re-tested. Good Luck!!
